The Best Movies of 2021 (So Far) including the Now Showing and Upcoming Movies .
The pandemic may be far from over, but when it comes to the movies, things appear to have turned a corner–at least, for now. The success of A Quiet Place: Part II, F9 and Black Widow at the domestic box-office, alongside solid showings from Cruella, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It and Space Jam: A New Legacy, proves that, even if the industry hasn’t returned to its pre-COVID heyday.
With the theatrical situation is finally looking up. That’s undoubtedly good news for the second half of the year, since Hollywood is banking on a slate of high-profile premieres to help make up for the disaster that was 2020, including Denis Villeneuve’s star-studded Dune and Steven Spielberg’s long-awaited remake of West Side Story.
Still, one need not focus on the future to get excited about 2021, since the past few months have been full of great titles. July in particular brought with it a bountiful collection of standout works, including the pulse-pounding Sabaya (a documentary about Syrian activists rescuing women who were kidnapped and turned into sex slaves by ISIS),.
The enlivening Summer of Soul (Questlove’s concert film about the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival), and the inventive The Sparks Brothers (Edgar Wright’s tribute to the enduring pop music outfit Sparks). And that’s not to mention Pig, a sterling American debut from writer/director Michael Sarnoski that boasts one of the finest performances of Nicolas Cage’s career.
No matter where these films are seen, their excellence shines through. As we head into the dog days of summer, these are our picks for the best films of the year. Read the full list here at Esquire.
